Cat-Proof Planters, Results

Since having my abys, I've missed out on my limited joy of having plants in the house. It has nothing to do with them eating plants, though they will. No, I had more of an issue with the cats sleeping in the plant, digging all the rocks out, dragging them through the house once successfully uprooted...

Maybe these were just kitten behaviors, but I only had a couple plants, and it was easier to just get rid of them rather than vacuum dirt, pick up leaves, repair broken stems every day.

I made a few terrariums out of old fish bowls and vases. I placed them on the highest shelf in my room, taking them down only while I was home.

This method seemed to work wonders. The cats looked, but did not touch. They couldn't reach inside to dig in the dirt, and it was too ackward for them to stick their head inside to pull out any of the plants.

Or so I thought...

I made the mistake of leaving one down once and found my newly placed bromeliad on the carpet. Totally my bad: I put it back and learned my lesson.

And yet, I think the reprieve was a brief one. Now that CJ is accustomed to the plants, and maybe because they're bigger - he's been getting into them on the top shelf.

I don't know how. I can't see any room for him to get up there, much less stand, but he got to the middle one and dug the dirt out of it. Supposedly in an effort to fish out the rocks I have in there.

I rearranged the 7 glass containers hoping that would block any purchase he found earlier.

I hadn't left the house for 30 minutes this morning when my husband called to inform me that he had to close my door, as CJ had went immediately to work on knocking over my terrariums. (That'll show me... blocking any way for him to stand up there.)

It seems, that if I want plants in my room, it's going to have to be an aquarium sized, covered, and fully sealed device.
