Curiosity Killed the Cat

Figurative at this point, but we're working hard to keep this from coming true.

CJ has a full blown obsession with trying to get outside the house. For years we've been able to keep the doors open at length with neither Misty nor CJ the least interested in stepping over the threshhold.

I think it's my fault things have changed. My husband believes it to be his fault.

I brought CJ outside in my arms to be petted by someone in a car. He got on my shoulder and jumped off my back, his feet touching grass for the first time in his life.

My husband allowed a visitor to bring his Pomeranian over. It trotted in from outside and was the first time CJ and Misty met a dog.

We've come to believe that our combined actions has given CJ the impression that great and glorious things are on the outside, and none of them are dangerous. When the door opens now, he sprints for the opening. He's gotten outside 3 times in the past week, and it's gotten harder and harder to get him back in the house each time.

It's really distressing. My county doesn't have leash law. The dogs are *not* friendly, and CJ has been spending his days going from window to window looking outside, waiting for his next opportunity. Lets forget the dogs. Abyssinians are not cheap. I highly doubt someone else would find him and bring him back. That's just truth. Purebreds don't stay lost for long.

And so what's the fix?

Be like all those other cat owners and learn to close the door. Warn people to be careful coming in and out.

Had to happen some day.
